As is said on the comments page, mystery is part of the aura and appeal of
BoC's music. BoC want to leave space in the listeners' minds
to make their own associations. For that reason,
think very carefully before deciding whether to read on.
Some lyrics are little more than guesswork. Others have been identified
from the source materials and are therefore accurate.

From the end of the track, gradually slowing down:
"... and so you could become *very* sensitive to everything, you start
walking through the studio, you go: 'ah yes, it's going to be a good day, I
can feel -'"
and so it seems to be someone talking about their experiences in a recording studio. [DC]

that's interesting! great! right! uh we, now, those, uh, looks like full-dimensional ...

When I'm with a friend /

- Me, too. /
Right now, I'm the Loving Me; isn't he cute?
And after I've done a real good job - I've cleaned my room,
or something like that - then I feel proud, and there's a Proud Me, too.
And when I'm with a friend, and we're having a good time, then I'm the Happy Me.
But when my friend has to go home, then I feel a little sad, so I turn into the Sad Me.
Anyway, there sure are a lot of different Me's, just like you have a lot of different You's.
Well, we're going outside to - outside to play now,
I hope all the different You's have fun, too! Bye!
[REPEATS FOUR TIMES]
The original vocals found in the Sesame Street clip sound like: this.
Modified to make it sound (marginally) more like
the vocals as they are heard in Whitewater make it sound like this.
[DC]
Thanks to [Eric] for the following: It's an old "Sesame Street" vignette, a little animated film where
a boy speaks about all the different emotions he feels, describing them as different
'me's inside him. At the end he walks off, and all his different 'me's walk off behind him,
each saying "bye!". That's the "bye bye, bye bye bye" heard at the end of "sunshine recorder".
Presumably the backwards sample in "Sixtyten" (see below) is from the same place.
In "Whitewater", the voice has been distorted, so that it no longer sounds like a child.]
One very important thought
"Now that the show is over, and we have jointly exercised our constitutional rights,
we would like to leave you with one very important thought: Some time in the future,
you may have the opportunity to serve as a juror in a so-called obscenity case.
It would be wise to remember that the same people who would stop you from viewing an
adult film may be back next year to complain about a book, or even a TV programme.
If you can be told what you can see or read, then it follows that you can be told what to
say or think. Defend your constitutionally-protected rights. No one else will do it for you. Thank you." [DC]
sixtyniner
"That tiny room at the beach was absolutely the perfect place for my first time.
When we came together, I could feel the hairs growing on my chest. I saw my future.
I saw my past. For a few minutes it was like being alive. They lived happily ever after.
All my questions had been answered. All my fears disappeared. All that was left was a kiss.
Every move we made was a kiss." (submitted by [anon])
an eagle in your mind
Lyrics are sheer guesswork on my part. Any better suggestions? Or, better, the proper words/source?
"[Holts ...] is close to the sea,
fallen boulders, old ruins, and cliffs,
all at the top of a sand-[edifice?],
high above the sea:
a safe place for cubs.
We wait ... close.
Notice the [par...]
She leaves us [weight? loaded by others]
The [holts?] are evenly [spaced], about 500 meters apart,
... only enough to fool passers-by, or the [other ...] [DC]
[JimE] has some different suggestions:
"Holts are nearly always close to the sea,
fallen boulders, old ruins, and cliffs,
all at the top of a [sand crevice?],
high above the sea:
a safe place for cubs.
We wait ... tense. We're disappointed.
She leaves her [sprint?] loaded by others of us
The holts are evenly [spent?], about 500 meters apart,
[some warped speech] who passes by, or they (advertise?)"
("We're disappointed" seems to be the best suggestion for that line).
[Simon Wilkinson] suggests similar words, with a few minor changes:
"She leaves us [wait?] [loaded for others of us?].
The holts are about 500 meters apart,
And of use only [?] pass us by, or they [advertise?]"
and he also points out that the voice sounds similar to that of Welsh actor Philip Madoc
(heard very briefly here at links Simon provided: 1,
2).
Thanks again to [JimE] for noticing something else: there's a
background sound throughout the song which could be
"sweat-sweat" (in the first part of the song), with "tension"
coming in later. It's hard to recognise as speech, but it could well
be; one of the interviews says that the "percussion" in the track
was constructed using the voice of the girlfriend of one of BoC.
the colour of the fire
"l love you", etc.
Thanks again to [Eric] for this info: another Sesame Street vignette,
possibly from the mid-eighties. This one shows a sort of first person view of a
girl making the words "I love you" on paper. You don't see the girl, just the writing,
as though the writer is invisible. She starts off mis-spelling "love" as "luv" and then erasing it,
which is why we hear "I Luv? No." [sound of eraser]. Every once in a while she doodles while singing,
before attempting to write the words again. Finally, she correctly writes "I love you", saying the
words with real satisfaction, and stars shoot out of of the center of the screen as she breathes a
sigh of happiness, and that ends the film.
Classic Sesame Street vignette featuring the "I love you" vocal.
telephasic workshop
The voices that are all chopped up during the song are saying 'now this is very irresponsible' there is also a Scottish accent saying 'yer no gonnae' which translated means 'you are not going to...' [Steven Harran]
sixtyten
Forwards: At about 2:27, and elsewhere: "David Addison" (name of character played by Bruce Willis in the show 'Moonlighting').
Alternatively, [Derek] suggests that this is merely "What's happening?" and [John M] is pretty certain it's "They're after me"; [DC]
thinks it's David Addison, so readers will have to decide from themselves.
The same sample occurs reversed a few times as well.
Backwards: "There are a lot of different 'me's, you know. There's the mad me, when I get angry." [DC]
[Second quote: same Sesame Street vignette as "whitewater" lyrics]
turquoise hexagon sun
Various bits of speech, repeated elsewhere in the track. It's hard to make out much, but here's [DC]'s guess at some of it:
"there's been a [release/leak]"? [female voice near start] - 0:36, 1:58
"Oh, ... I know" [Scottish girl] - 1:14, 2:35
"Just slightly" [different Scottish girl] - 4:29
"... just [come in at the] end, right?" [English man] - 4:19
"fan - tastic" [same man?] - at about 4:38.
The girl speaking at about 1:22 and 2:44 sounds (to me) like the same one who speaks all the way through all 3 live
recordings of BoC at ATP, Lighthouse, and Warp - which adds to suspicions that these
are recordings of people talking at the the Hexagon Sun studio, as the title of the track would suggest.
roygbiv
There are lots of opinions on what is said, so make your own minds up.
Suggestions include "say!" [DC], "Safe!" [John S.]; "Rain" [Rory];
"hey!", "faith", "a lake", "the sea", "yes" (backwards), and "yeah!" (backwards) -
this last suggestion from [Kaini Industries] seems to get the popular vote. Take your pick!
Additional words in the Alpha Quest mix are as follows:
"Doorways up and down the hall
Wonder what's behind them all?
Doors that lead to anywhere
Got to A, B, C what's there
Got to A, B, C, Decide
Where's the door I haven't tried?
A, B, C, D, East and West
Going on an Alphaquest!"
(This mix was released against BoC's wishes)
[Source of the extra vocals in this track: they are from a Sesame Street
segment called "Alphaquest"]
aquarius
[Lots of numbers] "Orange!" "Yeah, that's right".
[David Poppers] noted that the "Yeah, that's right!" and laughter is apparently from another
Sesame Street animation (sample).
It occured to [Pat R] that the girl might be saying "for sandisons". Sandison being Marcus and Mike's last name. This has also being confirmed by [DC]; his very reliable source, who likes to remain anonymous, claimed it to be "for Sandison" but back in the days it wasn't publically known they were brothers which might explain why [DC] was told "Sandison" at that time. But if you listen closely it does in fact sound more like a plural "for San-di-sons" (said in a funny way though).
aquarius (version 3)
(1) Numbers in track are a bit different
(2) Running vocals "I'm listening!"
(3) Computer voice at 4:40 "Sixtyten new aquarius".
"happy cycling"
Backwards:
(Interviewer's voice): "... to tell us about backwards masking ??? and the Electric
Light Orchestra. A whole crowd of ... got all ... because they thought that if ...
span backwards on a turntable, it said something like 'Christ is infernal'.
It was enough to ... the followers of ELO and Jeff Lynn in particular."
(Jeff Lynn's voice): "It is absolutely ... it didn't say anything, anything of the sort.
Anyone who can write a song played forwards and have it say something masked
backwards has got to be some kind of genius, and that I ain't!
I was upset at first by the accusations, you know, but now, but now I would find them funny
... we're totally innocent of all those claims ... and we're all God-fearing chaps!"
[This is Jeff Lynn responding to claims about backwards masking in an ELO song called "Eldorado";
some people seem to have got themselves worked up about what they thought they heard.
For the record, it is generally accepted that this ELO song contains no backwards masked message.
Back to "happy cycling": The voice that comes in now and again in the first part
(when played forwards) of the song may be saying "WACO!" backwards.] [DC]
[Sam Lambert] has pointed out yet another of those little details in the track that
can be so easily overlooked. During the first part of the track, whenever the
seagull sounds are heard, there is also a sound like a man singing, rather faint
and tinny.
xyz
The voice is saying "X, Y, Z"; that's "zee", not "zed".
Some backwards speech, just before the track becomes more frantic:
"Joe - [the stick is broken?] ..."
"Yeah, I'm gonna be a pirate and get lots of money"
"Yeah, lots of money!" [DC]

gyroscope
[Child counting "one, two, three, four". See comments page.]
[Steven Norgate] says that the sample is from the film
Mercury Rising,
about an autistic boy who is considered dangerous because of
his ability to decipher a government code; he is protected by
Bruce Willis' character while being pursued by a government agent.
I'm told that the sample is probably from a tense scene in which the boy
and Willis end up in a crowded lift with their pursuer, eyeing each
other warily, while the boy reads out the floor numbers in
an emotionally detached way. (Not confirmed).
[Brian Palan] mentioned that the voice reading numbers in "Gyroscope" on Geogaddi isn't from the film Mercury Rising but that it's taken from a recording on the Conet Project boxed set. The Conet Project documents "numbers stations" which are found all along the shortwave radio spectrum. They're used by the world's intelligence agencies to send secret messages to agents in the field. If anyone would like to read more, go to: http://www.irdial.com/conet.htm

"I'm a God-darned Satanist, and, if I wanted, I'd be in [t]his business too" [DC]
[Thanks to [chris123abcus] for noticing that there was backwards speech here]
[aquinas] has pointed out that in the first couple of seconds of the song,
there is a faint woman's voice, as though through a loudspeaker,
saying "alpha and omega", and that this recurs quietly throughout
the track.

"Just relax, and enjoy this pleasant adventure. Here you are, secure and protected,
in this, your special place, letting my voice flow into your mind. There's no need
to concentrate. Just gently as you go. Suggestions are going into your unconscious mind.
Open yourself up to the greater wisdom and understanding. So, now, letting the sound
of my voice reach the inner, healthy, receptive centre of yourself. See yourself now
in your imagination; and you are being tranformed in a positive healthy way, so you
are programming your unconscious mind, gaining new insight into your directions,
in the future. Allow yourself to be more aware of your pathway through this life.
[Enjoy all that you can.(?)] As the days go by, you are programming your mind,
and you are allowing this to happen. These things are happening day by day,
just as I tell you they are happening, wherever you are. See this happening.
Allow it to become part of you; more and more happily, more and more surely,
more and more powerfully, each day. When it is necessary, you can program yourself,
be able to dream the information you require. This awareness will come back to you at your own rate.
It will never be more than you can cope with. This guidance will help show you the way.
This will only happen if you choose it will be so. Ready, now ..." [DC]

"I don't know, it makes it ???. I still got 'em, I still dream about him. I don't know, I just wish it had never happened."
"??? the whole thing?" "The whole ... the whole thing goes over and over."
"so, those prophecies you've been describing" ... "and now to business [matters?]..."(?) [DC]
(The "Season of The Witch" lyrics come from a dream sequence at the start of the film (audio sample),
where, among other things, the lead female character dreams that her husband is leaving her in
kennels for the week while he goes away. A dog barks in the cage next to hers. You can't hear the
"brought her pillow" in the BoC sample - I added it to complete the quote. Note that this is
NOT the film of that name in the "Halloween" series; it is a
different film, with an alternative
title of "Jack's Wife", which I think better conveys the fact that it is essentially a
psychological drama and not a horror film - [DC]). (audio sample provided by YELLOW)
As for "the teddy bear's picnic", thanks to [Krelian] for an interesting observation: the song
is from The Singing Detective,
a series with a theme of childhood trauma.
Towards the end of the track, a voice repeats something like
"it must be a [message] ... look up there!" [DC]
Recent comments: [Mike Jedlicka] spotted the source for:
"I don't know, it makes it ???. I still got 'em, I still dream about him. I don't know, I just wish it had never happened."
"??? the whole thing?" "The whole ... the whole thing goes over and over."
The source is apparently an
"A & E" Investigative Report,
called "Behind Bars: Supermax", in which an interview is
held with Tommy Silverstein;
the words above are apparently from this interview. Also, what Tommy Silverstein was talking about is when he killed a police officer while in jail.

[Pete from Phaelam] suggests that the creaky sounds in the track are slowed down

For that last "looped voice" part, [Hilary F] suggests "take my hand", which was my initial impression as well.
On http://www.boardsofcanada.com, the same sample
appears in the scene "seven forty seven". If you fly up to a suitable "pillar" you'll hear it
a bit more clearly on its own.

"I am Amo Bishop Roden. This is the compound in Waco today ..."
"Although not a follower of David Koresh, she is a devoted Branch Davidian."
"And I don't think that, somehow, a regular ... And you're away from the compound?"
"Yes, and suddenly I'm overcome by this suicidal impulse."
"If that had just happened to me I'd [croak?]!" [DC]
[dave_from_2001] suggests the last line: "That hasn't happened to me, I promise you!"
Note that the lyrics of "1969" occur in "poppy seed", and that Amo Bishop Roden,
after whom a BoC track is named, is mentioned; it looks as though they even use a
sample of Roden herself speaking here.

First part of song:
"Quia fec..." (see below for the rest)"
I've been informed that the voice at the end is reciting the Lord's Prayer:
"Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom,
the power, and the glory forever, amen."
[Main musical loop: J.S.Bach's Magnificat ("Aria: Quia fecit mihi magna") - thanks, [dave_from_2001], for identifying this as from the Magnificat.]
The full quotation is:
"Quia fecit mihi magna qui potens est, et sanctum nomen eius"
This is from Luke 1:49 in the Latin vulgate version - rough translation:
"because the One who is powerful has performed great works for me, and His name is holy". [DC]
If you look at the context of this verse, you will see the Christmas connection that makes it fit in with the "Whine and Missingtoe" CD that it appears on.
Also if one listens between the 1.07 and 2 minute mark one can hear there is a heavily treated vocal which recites the following passage from hymn "Silent Night":
"Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright,
Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace"
The vocal is treated in such a way that makes the lyric hard to decipher, which is also the case with the melody to "Silent Night". [Derek]
trapped
[these lyrics are not by BoC; this is a remix. Thanks to my contributor (who can
let me know how he wishes to be credited)]:
Should I listen what you say
or listen what your folks say?
It's a tough decision to make.
I don't really wanna lose you
but I don't want your folks to
turn me over to the hands of the law.
I guess they think that I'm not good enough for you.
I can tell the way they act and their attitudes.
As the tears roll from my eyes I feel the hurt inside.
As I reach out to you saying I'm so confused.
CHORUS:
Oh oh I'm trapped like a fool I'm in a cage.
I can't get out
You see I'm trapped,
Can't you see I'm so confused?
I can't get out.
You see I'm trapped,
like a fool I'm in a cage.
I can't get out.
You see I'm trapped,
Can't you see I'm so confused?
I can't get out!
If you love one another
why should you let this go further?
Can't you see it's gonna pull us apart?
If you think I can't afford to
support you if you want to,
Ever think about ever settlin' down.
I guess they think that I'm not good enough for you.
I can tell the way they act and their attitudes.
[CHORUS]
(Can't you see I'm so trapped
and I don't know what to do.)
(Can't you see I'm so trapped.
so in love with you.)
See I'm trapped
and I'm so confused
I'm like a man in a cage
and I'm so in love with you.
I'm trapped
your thoughts are in the way
And I don't know what to say
you see I'm trapped.
Oh I told myself
if I ever love again
What am I gonna do about it? Say it again (trapped).
Oh baby I'm trapped (can't you see I'm so trapped?)
I'm so confused (and I don't know what to do)
I'm like a man in a cage (can't you see I'm so trapped)
And I'm so in love with you
love with
love with you.
Oh I'm trapped
feel so confused
so impressed (trapped).
Hey
I'm so in love with you.
Oh I'm trapped baby
Oh I'm trapped baby.
midas touch
[again, lyrics not by BoC; this is a remix]
You say you're going through changes,
every day it seems your life is up and down
and you say that you're lookin' for an answer,
everwhere you look it seems it can't be found
like searchin' tryin' to find a rainbow
no one's ever found the treasures told to be,
but if you're lookin' for a lover,
everything you need, you can find right here in me
I've got the Midas Touch,
everything I touch turns to gold, or sugar,
I've got the Midas Touch,
baby, let me touch your body and your soul.
Now you've been trapped by love,
someone breaks your heart and then he says goodbye,
so you say that you'll never love another,
tired of playing games and that's the reason why,
but now whenever we're together,
there's a certain feeling that we both agree,
and it's time that you opened up to love,
cos you don't ever try then baby you may never see,
I've got the Midas Touch,
everything I touch turns to gold, hey darlin',
I've got the Midas Touch,
baby, let me touch your body and your soul.
Together you and I were meant to be,
I'll be right beside you whenever you need me,
cos the love we have will never fade away,
you can count on me, cos I'm here to stay.
I've got the Midas Touch,
everything I touch turns to gold, hey darlin',
I've got the Midas Touch,
baby, let me touch your body and your soul.
would you do that for me?
Midas, Midas, Midas
(touch, touch, touch)

the story of xentrix
(Many thanks to [Ceri JC] for bringing this to the author's attention):
I have a story to tell. Once there was a boy who had a large dog; the dog was called Xentrix.
One day the boy was walking in the woods with Xentrix; he stumbled on a wooden door.
Xentrix opened the door, and the boy followed him inside.
What the boy saw amazed him: there was a cave one mile long, and inside the cave were
one million other children and a million dogs.
The boy could not hold back his tears when he heard Xentrix say,
"Welcome my friend. These are my people; now they are your people too."
